The Wiltshire Golf League was founded in 1979 by Bill Tait (North Wilts), John Sullivan (Marlborough) and Chris Moore (Ogbourne Downs). The aim of the League was to provide competitive golf during the golfing season for low handicap golfers throughout Wiltshire.
The first Match was played between Marlborough and North Wilts on Saturday 12th May 1979 and concluded in an honourable draw. It was played on the Saturday morning so that the participants could then sit down to watch the Arsenal v Manchester United FA Cup Final which turned out to be a very good decision as it was a final well worth watching with three goals in the last five minutes including the Liam Brady / Alan Sunderland last minute winner (Arsenal 3 / Manchester United 2 for those too young to remember). In that year the League comprised 8 of the golf clubs then existing in Wiltshire.
The League has grown since 1979 and now comprises 17 golf clubs playing in three Divisions with the trophies for the winners being named after the three founders of the League.
The current committee of the Wiltshire Golf League is Chairman - Doug Morgan (Cumberwell Park), Secretary / Treasurer - Adrian Northall (North Wilts) and a member of the Club hosting the League Finals Day in October.
This year Finals Day is at Broome Manor GC and Paul Sandry of Broome Manor is our third committee member with particular responsibility for the Finals Day arrangements. The aim of the league remains to provide highly competitive but friendly golf for low handicap golfers throughout the county.
